Former media professor Karl Beckstrand is an award-winning author-illustrator, publisher, educator, and speaker whose work spans biographies, bilingual picture books, cross-cultural education, relationships, and personal development. Since founding Premio Publishing in 2004, he has created 50 titles and offers 300+ products used in homes, schools, libraries, and organizations worldwide.

Beckstrand presents keynotes, workshops, author panels, and seminar sessions of 50–110 minutes for schools, universities, conferences, literacy organizations, businesses, and community groups. All sessions can be adapted as panels with advanced notice and are available in English or Spanish. Organizations may offset the speaker fee with a qualifying book order.

Raised in Silicon Valley, Beckstrand has lived in South America and visited four continents and twelve countries. Nearly fluent in Spanish, Beckstrand has taught English to refugees. He’s also studied German, Italian, Portuguese, and American Sign Language.
He earned a B.A. in Journalism from Brigham Young University and an M.A. in International Relations and Conflict Resolution from American Public University, along with a broadcast and film certificate from Film A. Academy. He interned for a Massachusetts publisher and for Congress in Washington, D.C.
Besides teaching media courses at state colleges for more than a decade, he was a technical recruiter and served as a volunteer chaplain at Stanford University Hospital and as a patient interpreter for Angel Flight, a medical transportation nonprofit.
Beckstrand founded Premio Publishing in 2004. When he’s not writing or presenting, he enjoys hiking, studying, and fine and performing arts (typically not all at once).
