College media instructor and award-winning publisher Karl W. Beckstrand is committed to empowering marginalized groups/individuals. For fifteen years he taught English to immigrants and refugees. He has been a volunteer chaplain at Stanford University Hospital and an in-flight patient interpreter for Angel Flight (medical charity)
Beckstrand’s works reflect a multicultural world. Since 2004, his company, Premio Publishing & Gozo Books, has produced and distributed works by women, Hispanics, Asians, and people of various faiths. It boasts 50 unique titles and 300 products—most with characters of color (reviews by Kirkus, Publisher’s Weekly, and School Library Journal). Beckstrand’s best-selling titles have been selected by schools; federal, state, and local governments; businesses; and non-profit organizations.
Raised in a cosmopolitan mecca (Silicon Valley), Beckstrand has lived in South America, visited four continents, twelve countries, and has studied the cultures of the Middle East and Western Civilization. In addition to near-fluent Spanish, he has basic comprehension of German, Italian, Portuguese, and ASL. His recent and distant ancestors immigrated from South Africa, Canada, Sweden, Scotland, Switzerland, France, England, and Ireland (there may be some Native Americans in the mix).
A natural with curriculum creation and life plotting, Beckstrand teaches media and design at a state college and is a regular contributor in television, radio, studio, stage, web, and film. He has sung in a couple of rock bands and loves volleyball. He can build a pc, kayak, handle a bow and arrow, water and snow ski, and ride horses (typically not at the same time).
Beckstrand earned a B.A. in journalism from Brigham Young University, an M.A. in international relations and conflict resolution from American Public University, and a certificate from Film A. Academy. He interned for a Massachusetts publisher and for Congress in D.C.
He encourages literacy and reading wherever he presents. His company has donated hundreds of books locally and internationally.

Beckstrand has authored a series of immigrant biographies for young readers and two self-help books for adults. “I love to hear and share true stories of courage and resiliency.” Participants will learn how to identify their core message and gather, organize, and articulate it in a way that will grab and influence readers. Some marketing tips will be shared. (Can be in English or Spanish—or a workshop with notice)

Best-selling author and college media instructor Karl Beckstrand shares simple steps to publishing success (including ebooks) 50 – 110 minutes. How do you get your book/product to your target audience/buyers—and have it consumed? Beckstrand presents the pros and cons of traditional, self-, and e-publishing (including Print on Demand), and how to market to a global audience using traditional and new media. In the digital age plot, character, and setting are still essential; what has changed is delivery. Beckstrand tells how to find an editor, designer, and agent. He can take questions and recommend options based on participant needs (in English or Spanish). Participants will learn how to research, write, publish, and market their stories (fiction or nonfiction). Can include copyright law and can be a panel with advanced notice.

He’ll show inverted pyramid story structure, formatting (acronyms, dates, titles, addresses), leads, and headlines that will grab media professionals, and how to follow up for a spot on a show. He explains libel and slander and can answer questions regarding summaries, metadata, links, and other details that can get a story noticed. Beckstrand has access to a variety of professionals who can offer input in panels, workshops, labs, and seminars.
